Expert's presentation

Originally the castle was a monastery and the present tower was the bell tower. During the 15th century, an initial defensive structure was added by the Marquises del Carretto, which was followed by subsequent renovations and extensions, such as the medieval-era arch joining the castle to the tower. The 27-meter-high Lombard-style tower has friezes and hanging arches made of brick and stone. Today the castle has a 17th-century facade and retains the 16th-century loggia at the rear. The Carretto family in the mid-19th century ceded the property to the Della Rovere family, which was followed by the Polleri family of Genoa.
Facing the castle is the characteristic bridge elevation and to access the interior to cross the old gateway into the ancient city wall.

One of the most scenic examples of the typical layering of styles in the history of the Alta Langa Valle Bormida.
