Orvieto "The Hidden City"
Guided tour to the imposing tufa cliff on which the city stands.
A walk to the roots of history - between the Orvieto Archaeological Environmental Park and "Orvieto Underground" - to discover what is hidden underground or overlooks the cliff: columbaria, quarries, ravines, a medieval underground oil mill, Etruscan wells, the cave of the Fossil Trunks.
The Activity will last approximately 4 hours.
Orvieto, a thousand-year-old city suspended almost by magic between heaven and earth, has revealed another of the aspects that make it unique and exceptional: a maze of caves is hidden in the silent darkness of the cliff.
The particular geological nature of the rock on which it stands has allowed the inhabitants to excavate, over the course of some 2,500 years, an incredible number of cavities that stretch, overlap, and intersect below the modern urban fabric.
They are a valuable reservoir of historical and archaeological information, only recently studied organically and scientifically. If the "surface" appearance of the city has changed with the passage of time, the underground structures that served it have remained, for the most part, intact.
